Today, students went to the library to check out books; we will read every day at the beginning of the day. Students should be sure they keep a fiction book to read during the whole quarter. We will try to return to the library every 3 or 4 weeks if it’s available.
Then, students read independently.
We have a brief discussion about one great American rivalry–the North and the South. We talked about the Civil war and the Reconstruction. We talked about what a Yankee is in this context and how some Southerners from the early days (and some still today) view Yankees.
Tomorrow, we begin reading a short story set in the South during the Reconstruction.

Today, students participated in an in-class activity about rivalries. Absent students have no work to make up. We talked about rivalries in society and how some might react to others who disagree with their preferences and how it’s absolutely possible to be cordial with someone even if you disagree. Next week, we’ll start reading a story where some characters take issue with a person because of a deep-seated rivalry that continues to this day.

Today, we began the second semester of the year.
We began by reviewing classroom expectations; students agreed to the classroom expectations. The biggest change from last semester is that late work may only be submitted up to 2 weeks late. The syllabus should also have been emailed home to primary contacts through Infinite Campus.
Students completed a required survey in Google Classroom, due by the end of the day today.
